Legal 500 – September 2011
22 September 2011
Ellisons Solicitors is delighted that this year’s Legal 500 research continues to highlight the firm’s developments and achievements with recognition as a leading firm in nine categories. Research is based upon client and intermediary interviews as well as peer input. As an Essex-based firm, and in spite of being recognised by The Lawyer magazine in the Top 200 UK Law Firms, being considered as part of the “South East” region when much of our client base and direct competition is compared under “East Anglia”, is a challenge.
We perform well in our core areas of practice such as Corporate and Commercial, Commercial Property, Employment, Dispute Resolution and Private Client where tables are broken down into county but the same has not always been true for the niche practices who jostle for position in the wider regional tables.
This year, however, our specialist Insurance Litigation team led by Robert Jones is finally recognised in the Personal Injury Defendant tables; the only entrant from Essex amidst a dominance of South Coast firms. This is also true of our other new entrant practice Licensing whilst Planning also holds its own in the larger regional cut.
Back in the Essex tables, Seamus Clifford has been rewarded for his hard work in building up the Corporate and Commercial practice in challenging times by going up a tier of the tables and Tim Logan’s team moves back into the tables for Personal Tax, Trusts and Probate. Being recognised as top tier professionals is great but what is most pleasing is the strong validation of client comments in our core areas of practice:
Corporate and commercial: Essex
In 2010, Ellisons’ ‘reliable and informed team’ advised on a £15m company fundraiser, as well as several multimillion-pound management buyouts and business disposals. The team also advised four of the five Stanley Bragg directors in their acquisition of parts of the business and assets of the Stanley Bragg group of companies. Practice head Seamus Clifford is praised for his ‘clarity, responsiveness and business understanding’.
Commercial property: Essex
Kevin Wilsher’s team at Ellisons is praised for its ‘excellent industry knowledge and business acumen’. Clients include HSBC and Essex Wildlife Trust.
Dispute Resolution: Essex
Ellisons’ Graeme Wallington is an ‘outstanding lawyer with very strong judgement’. Clients include Colchester United FC and Supreme Pet Foods..
Employment :Essex
At Ellisons, Jayne Scott’s team represented Bob Russell MP in a high-profile sexual discrimination case. Other clients include Colchester United FC and Advance.
Family: Essex
Ellisons’ team is now headed by Nicola Coates following the departure of Jon Armstrong to set up his own firm. The team recently welcomed Stuart Connal to the Clacton office.
Personal Tax, Trusts and Probate: Essex
Tim Logan’s ‘friendly and sensitive’ team at Ellisons advises clients on contentious probate, pilot trusts, mirror wills and personal taxation
