David Heller is one of the many solicitors at Ellisons who has been with the firm since the very early stages of his career, having joined initially as a paralegal before starting his training contract in 2014. He has since qualified into the Corporate and Commercial department and is based in the Colchester office. In December 2020, David was promoted to the position of Associate.
When discussing his decision to pursue a career as a solicitor, David is quick to recall that he was inspired by his older brother, who also studied law and became a solicitor several years before him. Conversations with his brother about the profession, combined with his growing interest in the law whilst at university, planted the seed.
Once David graduated from the University of East Anglia, he completed his LPC at BPP Law School in London. He then gained experience as a paralegal, before joining Ellisons in 2013. David initially worked as a paralegal in Ellisons’ Commercial Property department, under the guidance of Managing Partner, Guy Longhurst. Nine months into his time with Ellisons, he was offered a training contract. David reflects fondly on his time working with Guy. His down to earth and human approach resonated with David in particular.
Even before starting his training contract, David knew that he wanted to do a training seat with the Corporate and Commercial team. This was largely because of his interest in business and desire to learn more about the inner workings of companies. Even after a short amount of time in the department, he was sure that this was the area of law he wanted to qualify into. During his training seat, David was fortunate enough to work very closely with Head of Department, Paul Forsyth. ‘Paul stands out to me as a mentor figure during my training contract. He was always there to run through any work queries I had and has supported me throughout my career to date’.
Having completed his training contract, David qualified into the Corporate and Commercial team in 2016 and has never looked back. Since qualifying, David has gained great experience working on a variety of different transactions, both alongside other members of the department and independently. David now also actively participates in the training and development of junior member of the team, which he enjoys immensely.
