To celebrate International Women’s Day on Wednesday 8th March, Solicitor, Harjot Grewal from our Real Estate team, gives us an insight into what encouraged her to start a career in law and the message she wants to spread to young women who are thinking of doing the same.
I qualified as a Solicitor on the 1st August 2017 and joined Ellisons in February 2022. I completed my Training Contract at a small sized East London firm and practiced in Residential Property at a local firm upon qualifying. During a period of self-reflection (in my fourth year), I took the decision to move on to a firm that provided me with more opportunities to develop my career and a firm that shared my values! Today, I am reassured in my day-to-day role at Ellisons, that I made the right decision!
I knew from an early age that I wanted to achieve and break the glass ceiling set for women, especially in the South Asian community, some of whom have been discouraged to progress from school onto higher education.
I have been fortunate that my family understood my passion for a career in law and I don’t think I fully appreciated the support and sacrifices that would entail until now! But it’s been well worth it.
Having the full support of my family, especially my grandmother and mum, who wished they could have studied further in education, but that opportunity was not afforded to them. With that being said, it has always been important to me to encourage everyone, especially the next generation of solicitors, to take on the challenges and pursue their careers to the fullest!
Let’s come together and make some noise and celebrate IWD, the theme being #EmbraceEquity, when we embrace equity, we embrace diversity and inclusion. Ellisons has successfully modelled and designed a mandatory training course, Equality, Diversity & Inclusion’ for all staff members to attend resulting in achieving gender equality.
